Linking the World: A special chain: UN Refugee Agency looks for 'China Solution'

Among over 200 new exhibitors participating the China International Supply Chain Expo this year, there is a special institution – the United Nations' Refugee Agency. The agency is at the expo, seeking cooperation with Chinese companies. Chen Tong reports.

It may be a bit odd to see a refugee shelter at the China International Supply Chain Expo.

Reporter: Why do you want to set up a refugee house here at the Expo?

SOPHIE MULLER UNHCR Representative in China "Because it represents innovation, humanitarian aid, protection."

It's Muller's first time to be at the expo.

The refugee issue may seem to have nothing to do with a supply chain expo. But in fact, Chinese companies have been offering increasing support for refugees and UNHCR globally.

"The Myanmar earthquake, where also products made in China have had a very strong importance."

Chinese private enterprises have been actively donating to refugee communities. In appreciation of public support and contributions, products designed and handmade by refugees are being offered to the public.

"Some of them have been made in China. For example, this one. These ones are products produced by Chinese suppliers. This one as well."

The UNHCR estimates there are over 122 million people around the world who have fled their homes – they need cost-efficient products for living and they also need solutions to make a living.

The UNHCR's procurement amount in 2024 was 1.3 billion U.S. dollars – and UN agencies are attracted by Chinese companies' cheaper prices and efficient production capabilities. They can buy cheaper and do more.

"If we can supply more with the same amount, knowing that our budget is shrinking, we'll be helping more refugees and providing hope and solutions to them in a more agile way."

And that explains why Muller and the refugee shelter show up at the expo.

"The role of Chinese companies is very important for us, and we hope we can have many more. And in this expo, that's exactly what we're trying to do, establishing more networks."

"So your target at the expo is finding more companies?"

"Exactly."
